I have ordered and will install a <strong>USB SmoothStepper<\/strong> board made by <a href=\"http:\/\/warp9td.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Warp9 Tech Design. Inc.<\/a> into one and maybe both of my homebuilt CNC controllers. Probably the first one will be installed and tested in my original chopper controller that I am now using on the Taig CNC mill.<\/p>\n<p>I have used a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.deskcnc.com\/controller2nd.html\" target=\"_blank\">serial pulse generator<\/a> before in that controller. Years ago I obtained the pulse card from DeskCNC called their <strong>2<sup>nd<\/sup> Generation Controller Board<\/strong>. It is actually still installed but not connected inside the controller case. This controller worked perfectly but is proprietary to DeskCNC software. It can be seen operating in the video viewable <a href=\"http:\/\/thehobbyistmachineshop.com\/cms\/projects\/cnc-chopper-controller\" target=\"_blank\">HERE<\/a> running the HB1 mill. That was more than several years ago. A hardware pulse generator makes for a very smooth running machine.<\/p>\n<p>Since I am now doing <a href=\"http:\/\/dimensionalart.org\/?p=107\" target=\"_blank\">very small, almost micro-machining<\/a> (1\/32&#8243;-&#8220;1\/64&#8221; ball end mills) I am becoming more concerned about accuracy. <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.cnccookbook.com\/2011\/12\/23\/motion-control-boards-take-mach3-from-hobby-class-to-industrial-grade-part-1\/\" target=\"_blank\">Several articles in the CNCCookbook blog by Bob Warfield<\/a> got me to thinking. Read <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.cnccookbook.com\/2011\/12\/24\/motion-control-boards-take-mach3-from-hobby-class-to-industrial-grade-part-2\/\" target=\"_blank\">both parts<\/a> written by Bob.<\/p>\n<p>Tormach CNC has a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tormach.com\/engineering_tmc.html\" target=\"_blank\">White Paper <\/a>about this very subject that I recommend for your reading pleasure. Click on the link in the previous sentence. They mention the Smoothstepper for use with MACH3.<\/p>\n<p>I then remembered how well I like the DeskCNC controller I gave up to use <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/machsupport.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">MACH3<\/a><\/strong>. So I investigated the currently available motion control boards. By the way, the <strong>2<sup>nd<\/sup> Generation DeskCNC Board<\/strong> is still being produced<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>Warp9TD Smoothstepper<\/strong> seems best suited to my needs and especially budget. It is designed expressly for use with the <strong>MACH3<\/strong>. There is now a LAN version board as well as the USB version.<\/p>\n<p>Some other brands of these boards sell for over $1K!
